Patron Point is a company founded on many years of experience of workflows and technology in public libraries and deep marketing skills and know-how. We believe that libraries can do great marketing with the right tools and practices.
The company’s sole purpose is to help public libraries reach their strategic goals through effective use of marketing, specifically the use of the latest marketing technology.
Our transformative idea is to provide libraries with the technologies used successfully by the business community and to shift library marketing and communications from a transaction-centric mode to a patron-centric one where engagement is personalized and relevant to the patron. This change will enable libraries to broadcast their value in effective and compelling ways and attract new patrons, boost library collection and service use, and meet their strategic and operational goals.
Meet Our Management Team
Ian DownieVice President, Growth
Ian has a strong track record of growing international software companies throughout his career. He is recognized as an innovator, creating businesses with a strong culture of integrity and high customer satisfaction. Most recently, Ian was one of the founders of collectionHQ, leading all commercial activity within the business as Director, International Business Development. In that role, Ian established and managed the teams responsible for global sales, customer service, training and marketing. Having secured around 50% share of the UK public library market he then spearheaded its highly successful expansion into USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and mainland Europe.
Prior to collectionHQ, Ian held Board level positions within media, publishing, recruitment and professional services focussing on strategic marketing and sales. He has solid experience of delivering successful go-to-market strategies, establishing high performing and happy sales teams with repeatable revenue and delighted customers.
Ted FonsVice President, Technology
Ted is a librarian with his MLS from Syracuse University. He has twenty plus years serving libraries and the organizations that support them. He is globally recognized as an expert in library workflows and bibliographic metadata. Most recently, Ted held the position of Executive Director of Data Services at OCLC. In that role Ted provided vision and direction for OCLC's global metadata network–that included the operational management and strategic planning for WorldCat. During that time, he participated in OCLC Research's experiments with linked data and as well as the BIBFRAME Early Experimenters project.
Previously, Ted was a senior product manager and Director of Customer Services at Innovative Interfaces. During this time, Ted conceived and launched the ground-breaking Electronic Resources Management (ERM) product; the first such system offered to the library marketplace.
Gene ShimshockVice President, Community
Gene brings to his job exceptional skills from a variety of fields—computer engineering, internet technology, technology marketing, business strategy and tactics, to name just a few. He has over 30 years of experience in technology and information marketing with impactful positions at Knight-Ridder, AutoWeb.com, Information Access Company (now part of Gale Group), and other high-technology ventures.
Most recently, Gene was VP, Global Marketing at Innovative Interfaces where he and his team were responsible for promoting the Innovative corporate brand and marketing the Company's product portfolio. He has been working with libraries for over fifteen years and carries this affinity and a passion for technology into his work.
Gene's academic accomplishments include a BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Connecticut, a BA in Liberal Arts from Fairfield University, and an MS in Financial Management from Fairfield University.
